Prof. Dr. Orio Giarini helped found and became the first Secretary General of The Geneva Association Switzerland, a leading organization of CEOs from insurance companies worldwide, in the 1970’s. Today, The Geneva Association has grown into the premier risk and insurance research institute worldwide supported by the private insurance industry. His ideas and innovative concepts have influenced the insurance world and general thinking about risk and insurance economics. His most influential ideas and writings have centered on the workings of the world’s new “service” economy, retirement and social security issues, and the “economics of uncertainty.”
His academic endeavors include associate professorships of economics at the European Institute of the University of Geneva, and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is also the co-founder of the World Fire Statistic Centre and he founded and has managed many networks of experts who deal with insurance related issues. The most prominent networks still active are the Four Pillars Network on social security issues, the network of Risk Managers, and the network of experts on the new service economy. Altogether these groups have several thousand members.
He has been honored many times for his accomplishments in Europe and around the world. In 2005 he was named a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Science. He is an Honorary Member of the prestigious Club of Rome.
